Little Jura things

Little Jura things

The Jura is a mountain range or massif in Europe that stretches from France to Germany through Switzerland. Jura is also an island in Scotland famous for its whisky. But Jura is also a Swiss Canton and a French department created in 1790. You will find here some flashes about the Jura department, its cities, towns, villages, nature, some of its friendly or exceptional inhabitants or both. Except the village of Conliège and its surroundings which are the subject of another main page here.

Images taken from photographs of sites in the French Jura are accompanied by the number of the department (Ain=01, Doubs=25, 39=Jura) in the parenthesis. For the others, Switzerland or Germany, the country is specified in the parenthesis instead of the department.

Entre-Deux-Monts, (39, image 2134), Morillon Rock,
original format 525 x 700 mm, T.M., 2017.
The Roche de Morillon, with its almost vertical slats, is a perfect drawing that nature offers to the curious.
First there was an anticline (a hump) resulting from colossal pressures that lifted the rock, first horizontally.
_the rock progessively took the shape of a "hat". Then it did not resist, it broke off.
_A fault then crossed it from the top to the bottom. Then water, frost and wind widened the crack.
_This erosion work was so great that the road went through the crack and we had to search for the other side.
What could I add to so much power if not the offering of a black-and-white image?

Marigny, Chalain lake (39, image 1334), Nod to Pierre Pétrequin,
original format 900 x 560 mm, T.M., 2016/2019.
On the shores of Chalain Lake, the archaeologist Pierre Pétrequin has excavated villages more than four thousand years old. He asked himself questions about the appearance of the houses, of which he found only the foundations (wooden piles) and tested several hypotheses as to their possible lifespan. These experiments led him to build houses which, although archaeologically heterogeneous, had a beautiful romantic appearance. Now (2020), they have expired. About the time frame that archaeologists had expected. By the way, beware of scientists.

Miège, (39, image 1341), Wonderful contemplation,
original format 900 x 900 mm, T.M., 2017.
That day, I was scouting in the village of Miège, near Nozeroy in the Jura. With a Swiss friend who frequents the Americas. The place is as interesting for its discreet aesthetics as for its historical remains. In search of a good photograph, I measured the monumental facade of the church with my eyes. It was then that a lady appeared under the porch, holding a little girl by the hand. The girl contemplated at length the vault of the porch under which she passed. From a distance, a strong and persistent question was perceived. A real question. The one I was waiting for.
