Consolation Valley is a nice location in the Jura karst in France near Switzerland.
During the last days of May, the light, surprisingly joyful in the Valley of Consolation, illuminated the monastery that now lies dormant there. The luxuriant spring vegetation played merrily with sun and shade. Even the rock and the cliff made an effort to be accessible. It was not possible to escape the need to fix these too brief moments to find back the atmosphere later, elsewhere, in another life. As we lingered around these buildings sober in their simple majesty we saw unexpected visitors arrive. One hundred men and a few women from the 13th Engineer Regiment of Valdahon, a nearby barracks. They gave a demonstration as the military have the secret. They looked like they were at home, these soldiers. So what was the warrior uniform doing in this place with the toga of eternal peace? Simple answer because the ceremony ended with a medal presentation to one of them. Several years later, looking back on these photos, I am still documenting this regiment. If curiosity pushes you, you can do it as I did, using very ordinary research tools. My respects to these soldiers who have to face considerable risks. The protection of the spirits of Consolation is perhaps not an accessory. In any case they inspired me in the work that follows.
