"La" Chaux-du-Dombief is a village in the French Jura of a few hundred inhabitants at an altitude of about 900 m. The territory of the commune is vast and covers varied landscapes, typical undulations of the Jura plateaus, beautiful cliffs, especially under the Pic de l'Aigle (almost 1000 m) and, above all, the magnificent Lake Ilay still called Lac de la Motte. There was a cartusian priory on the "Motte" of the lake (the island) which was excavated at the end of the 20th century by archaeologists. The Charterhouse monks were not only peaceful people, they quarrelled with others in the area and occasionally found a way to raze the Château de l'Aigle (Eagle Castle), inhabited by a somewhat aggressive lord who was not very concerned about his contractual commitments. Thus the history of the region is a good stimulus to inject contradictory emotions into the images of a sometimes very graphic landscape. T.M.
