The village of Colonne is set in a circle drawn by a very old wooden castle surrounded by a moat. The traces of the ditch can be seen from an airplane when the days deliver a right light and convenient vegetation. In the subsoil, a vast geological layer, called Marnes de Foulnay, retains water all year round and protects this region from drought so the countryside is favorable to profitable agriculture. In the center of the village, a Renaissance style castle whose interior was very damaged, has nevertheless preserved its post-medieval aspect and its first frame work. But the strange thing is elsewhere: Nearby this peaceful and tiny village now passes a very busy highway. Under the rolling of the lorries you can no longer hear the riders who used to come to the manor's portcullis. T.M.
